Two Summer Day Camps Offer Exposure and Exploration in Health Care Careers for Middle School Students

When should students start exploring careers? Often the answer is high school or college. We believe middle school is not too early for students to consider possible career fields. With so many careers in the healthcare field, it is critical that students start early to explore and experience options. For many middle school students, Health Career Day Camp is their first exposure to the healthcare field.
This year HealthForce Minnesota organized two summer camps in southern Minnesota—the Rochester Health Career Day Camp and the Greater Mankato Health Career Day Camp. Just having completed its third year, the Rochester Health Career Day Camp offers middle school students (grades 6–8) from southeastern Minnesota the opportunity to explore over 16 careers in the healthcare field. The Camp was held June 10–12, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a state-of-art facility, the Health Science Careers Center, in Rochester, Minnesota. During the Camp, students participated in a variety of hands-on and interactive activities and tours. Presenters from Mayo Clinic, Rochester Public Schools, Rochester Community and Technical College, Olmstead Medical Center (OMC) and others offered sessions in nursing, pharmacy, clinical laboratory science, yoga, EMT/G Cross, hypnosis, dental, veterinary technology, surgical technology, imaging, PT/OT/RT, medical illustration, SIM Lab, OMC tours, and more!
The $30 Camp fee included a pair of scrubs, lunch and snacks. For students who demonstrate financial need, ten scholarships were available on a first-come, first-served basis.
New this year was the Greater Mankato Health Career Day Camp. Teaming with Healthcare Education Industry Partnership and High-STEP - the Greater Mankato Health Science Advisory Committee, HealthForce Minnesota presented this two-day camp for students in grades 6–8. Camp was June 22–23 at ISJ-Mayo Health System in Mankato, Minnesota.
Sessions included diabetes, nursing, imaging, yoga, pharmacy, EMT, forensics, clinical laboratory science, physical therapy, and more. The cost for Camp was $40 and included scrubs, lunch and snacks. Up to ten scholarships were available to qualifying students on a first-come first-served basis.
